laser scanners are intended for non-contact determination of position of objects in space.
Spatial co-ordinates of an object are determined by scanning its location area with laser beam and analyzing images of the object by means of two CCD linear arrays. In particular, the scanners are used for 2D-control of guide plate position in systems for automatic control of working members of a road-building machine.

Output beam of a laser 1 goes through a beam splitter 2 onto a rotating polygonal prism 3. The beam reflected by the prism scans an object 4. Radiation scattered by the object is collected by a lens 5 and from diaphragm stop 6 directed to a photo-detector. In particular, the scanners are used in road-marking machines and designed for strip tracing in systems for automatic positioning of paint-spraying guns.
